Music Monday – BBVD

This one takes me back to my college days.  I grew up listening to a slew of different kinds of music, but I was always partial to the Big Band Era.  Glen Miller, Cab Calloway, and the like.  When Jon Favreau’s epic Swingers premiered in 1996 and I saw Big Bad Voodoo Daddy featured prominently, I knew I had found something special.

I actually saw them play in a few different venues and met them through a friend of a friend.  Just a heads up, when the lead singer of a band sees you at the bar and says, “Hey (MC’s real name)!  Thanks for coming up for the show, man!” it goes a long way to impress the chick you were just throwing around the dance floor.

God bless Scotty Morris.

Sadly, The Derby (the movie and real life location BBVD played frequently) is now a freaking Citibank.  Pardon me whilst my twenty-something self dies a little inside.

Music Monday – Thanks, Jon Acuff!

I’ve mentioned Acuff and number of times of the past couple of years for a variety of reasons.  I find him inspiring and hilarious, but I was never so grateful to read his blog until I hit his post about gusto.  For it was in that post that I was first introduced to my favorite band from last year, Mumford and Sons.

Absolute brilliance.  I bought the entire album based on “The Cave” and I was not disappointed.  Just about every track on this record speaks to me.

Who knew an upright bass, banjo, guitar, keyboard, and a kick drum could rock so damn hard?

You know those polls that ask for your top five albums you’d want on a desert island?  Mine would be all be Bon Jovi records culminating in the opus that is Slippery When Wet.

I give you the greatest rock anthem of all time.  Iconic.  Timeless.  And I kill it at karaoke.

I heard a song on the way home today that I’ve loved since the moment I heard it.  I have no direct experience in the context of the song, at least not in the last decade or so, but it speaks to me in places that are so base I’m not sure we even realize that they’re there.  Yet, each of us have that place and I think it is intrinsically woven into the fabric of our very humanity.

If you’ve ever experienced any emotional trauma in the realm of relationships, I don’t think you can avoid identifying with Christina Perri.  If that’s too XX-chromosome for you, then how about this:  I wouldn’t kick her out of bed for eating crackers.

Music Monday – Guilty Pleasure

We all have them.  It’s the song you can’t help but tap your toes, bang on your steering wheel, or grab your light sticks and….well, perhaps not the last one.

Last week, I introduced you to “our song” (the Wife and mine, not yours and mine, freak).  This week, it’s a song the Wife can’t believe I love.

Oh, and I love it.  The video is absolutely God-awful.  Except for Bootsy.

Bootsy kills it.

When this song hits my ear holes and I’m riding the bike, the ride gets just a skosh more funky.

What about you?  What’s your musical guilty pleasure?

As some of you may know, I’ve gotten quite a bit of inspiration from Jon Acuff (@jonacuff on Twitter).  If you are unfamiliar with Jon, click over to his blog and check him out…after you’re done here.  He doesn’t need the stat numbers like I do.  ;-)

Jon writes two distinct blogs: Stuff Christians Like (SCL) and what I’ll call an Inspirational/Motivational blog.  The former  is a satirical look at Christianity today.  If you are or know or heard about Christians, you’re missing out if you’re not reading Acuff.  The latter blog is geared around his book Quitter.  If you’ve not read it, again, you’re missing out.  Quitter is about closing the gap between your day job and your dream job.  Jon has taken that book and is starting to change thousands of lives.

My free ad for Jon notwithstanding, I found a feature he introduced earlier this month and I liked it so much, I figured I nick it.  He calls his feature the “Saturday Song” and each Saturday during January, he has posted a song that has inspired him at some point in his life.

I figure imitation is the greatest form of flattery, so I’m introducing Music Monday.  A clever twist and much manlier than Saturday Song according to my official poll results.* … Continue Reading
